between D and E
to taste is better than that taste .....same hold true for ...to distinguish...
though I am not clear on the usage of "those of" in D ....may be those of is needed to make sure that we compare species with species. Experts please confirm.

What is OA ??? also whats the source ?

D - phrase 'assisting flies to taste...' implies the previous clause (Hydrocarbons...in courtship)is helping to taste. In other words TO TASTE shows the purpose or intent of previous clause. Use of THAT TASTE does not show the same intent - rather it acts just as a reporting clause modifying FLIES

Patanjali,
explanation of TO TASTE shows the purpose or intent of previous clause is good.

Thanks
