Inequality question

Inequality question. I was not able to solve this question. My attempt got me D as the answer, but it is incorrect.

If a < x < b and c < y < d, is x < y ?

(1) a < c
(2) b < c

Answer is B

Given: a < x < b and c < y < d

(1) a < c
y must be greater than a but may or may not be greater than x. You can use a number line to prove this.

(2) b < c
So, a < x < b < c < y < d.
Clearly, x < y.

Answer is B.

-----a----c----x---y----b-----d---

Since we don't get a definite answer; NOT sufficient.

(2) b < c, the only possibility is -----a---x----b----c----y-----d----, which implies x < y holds true; SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is B.

oops i am really sorry as i could not respond to your reply, Anurag. My internet was not working from last 3 days. I live in a remote area and internet issues are enormous here.

Statement 1 is not sufficient..It says, a<c. let a =2.. so, 2<4<5 & 3(c)<5<8.So,X<Y..right? but look, as a<c. X could be any larger value than 2.Like, 2<15<18..& 3(c)<5<8..Here X > Y..Mixed answer..Not sufficient..

1) a<c, so y>a. We now know that both y and x are greater than 'a', but we don't know the relation between y and x. (Insufficient)

2) b<c. x<b<c<y. Break out the b and c, and you are left with x<y. (Sufficient)

Answer: B
