Need to score a 700+ Verbal 30 Barrier !!

by bsandhyav » Tue Oct 28, 2008 7:56 am
hi

I am facing a serious problem with my verbal. Though i'm pretty good at conversing in english i am unable to break the verbal 30-31 barrier. Plan to take my Gmat around Nov-15. Can anybody please give me some valuable suggestions?? My preparation is as follows:

OG 11- done over 80% of SC,RC,CR
Manhattan SC
Sahils Grammar Notes
Spidey's notes

I tend to get most of the CR right. On an average 4 SC and 5 RC wrong per test. 1 or 2 CR wrong occassionally (MGMAT was an exception where i got 50% CR wrong. They were in the 700 + level)
I think most of the RC's are wrong b'cos of time crunch. On account of lack of time i tend to guess the RC's blindly towards the end so that i can solve the last CR's and SC's accurately.

My test scores are as follows:

GMAT Prep1:590 Q45 V27 (Diagnostic Test)
After Manhattan SC
Kaplan CAT1 :570 Q38 V31
GMAT Prep2:640 Q47 V30
Kaplan CAT 3: 560 Q38 V28
MGMAT Free CAT :590 Q41 V31
GMAT Prep 1 Retake : 630 Q47 V30
Powerprep1 :650 Q48 V31

Also my quant remains in the 47-48 range in GMAT Prep(which i think is ok to get a 700+ as long as i can bring my verbal upto 40). However in the other tests my Quant is not so good. Which is a more accurate indicator? Any suggestions to improve my Quant??

Guyz i just simply need to score a 700+ this time in my test. Please advise me how to go about increasing my score from 650 to 700+ in the next 20-25 days!!!

Hi bsandhyav
1. Getting regular 47-48 in quant shows it is your strong area. By little more efforts and avoiding silly mistakes, you should try to get atleast 50 in quant. So, moving from 47 to 50 in quant will help improve overall score by 30 marks.

2. Now, regarding SC, one time solve OG-10 problems topic wise as distributed in Manhattan SC. Analyse mistakes. Having done that, solve all the problems of SC serial no. wise. IT will definitely help.

3. RC. Try to read very actively as if this is the most interesting piece of article in the world. For complex/scintific paras, try to have small one-two line summary.

GMAT in 20-25 days..... JUST PUSH PUSH PUSH as if there is nothing else in life.

My GMAT on 9thNov!
All the best.

Thanks 4 the reply. Improving my score from 47 to 50 in quant can push my score up by 30 marks....that seems very tempting but i am planning to concentrate solely on verbal for the next 1.5 weeks hoping to push the score up to 38-40. This is because i've noticed that the lower the gap between the Quant and verbal score the higher one tends to score. Once i've acheived this (tackled my weakness) i plan to target my strength. Any suggestions for good Quant material targetting the Q 50 level difficulty???
Also i'm not too sure if Quant is really my strength,as in though i undoubtedly score better in Quant than in verbal, my tests of Kaplan and MGMAT have comparatively lower scores in the range 38-41 than GMAT Prep. I'm not too sure which level of difficulty am i more likely to get in the real exam.

The OG10 strategy is a real good one....planning to follow it for the next 1.5 weeks...will let u knw how it works out 4 me. Thanx for the suggestion.

All the best for your exam on Nov 9....do let us know how u fare!!
