Lacking information about water use, people tend to overestimate the amount of water used by manually-powered equipment, such as sinks and toilets, that must be turned on and off, and underestimate it when used by automated equipment such as fountains and irrigation devices.


A) manually-powered equipment, such as sinks and toilets, that must be turned on and off, and underestimate it when
B) manually-powered equipment, such as sinks and toilets, that must be turned on and off, and underestimate that
C) equipment, such as sinks and toilets, which are manually powered and must be turned on and off and underestimate that
D) equipment, such as sinks and toilets, that are manually powered and must be turned on and off and underestimate it when
E) equipment, such as sinks and toilets, that is manually powered and must be turned on and off and underestimate it when

A) manually-powered equipment, such as sinks and toilets, that must be turned on and off, and underestimate it when

it most logically refers to the water used by manually powered equipment, and thus this version is nonsensical.


B) manually-powered equipment, such as sinks and toilets, that must be turned on and off, and underestimate that

This basically works. that is understood to mean the water. However, really what that refers to is not completely clear as that has no antecedent.

C) equipment, such as sinks and toilets, which are manually powered and must be turned on and off and underestimate that

The use of a non restrictive modifier starting with which results in a sentence that says basically that people overestimate the amount of water used by equipment.

D) equipment, such as sinks and toilets, that are manually powered and must be turned on and off and underestimate it when

equipment is singular, and so the plural construction, that are manually powered, which modifies equipment, and does not modify sinks and toilets, which are merely examples in a phrase split off from the sentence by commas, is not correct.

Meanwhile, it once again seems to refer to the water used by equipment ... that (are) manually powered, an thus a nonsensical meaning is conveyed by this version.

E) equipment, such as sinks and toilets, that is manually powered and must be turned on and off and underestimate it when

it seems to refer to the water used by equipment ... that is manually powered.

So the best, though imperfect, answer is B.

B is the best answer, but when first looking at the options I was going to eliminate it. It's a bit hard, after all, to imagine somebody turning on a sink - or a toilet. So it seemed that this option failed the logicality test - but then I saw that all the options had people turning sinks and toilets on and off. So definitely, B is the best, though very imperfect.

C is wrong because the underlined part is not paralel with the ending part of the sentence.
