Tips for Second time around

by matt_d » Wed Oct 08, 2008 5:26 pm
Although I appreciate everyone's input on this site, I was wondering if I could get Stacey Koprince's input on this. She seems to offer very good advice.

I just recently took the GMAT and scored a 620 (42Q 33V). I was very disappointed in my score especially since my practice sessions went very well. Having an engineering and very strong math background, I was also extremely disappointed in my Quantitative score. Before I took the test I studied using Kaplan w/ CD, all of the GMAT OG material, and took a GMAT prep test, which I scored a 700. I was getting a majority of the quantitative questions correct in the OG material, only really having trouble with those DS yes/no questions dealing with "if n is an integer is it a multiple of x+y." Low and behold I got a bunch of those on the actual test. Any recommendations on how I go about practicing those questions? Are there even any resources out there that are heavily involved in "n is a multiple" type question?
Furthermore, any other tips on improving my verbal score? I seem to be equally weak in RC, CR, and SC. My goal is 700 and I would like to keep going now that I am in "GMAT mode," but I feel like I've already exhausted all of the good material. Sorry for the long post, but any help or thoughts would be much appreciated.

sorry, I didn't mean to come across that way. I welcome everyone's advice. I read a few things that she posted and it really made sense, and she seems to have a great way of explaining things that clicked with me. Please if you can offer some help I would really appreciate too.

Haha, no worries, I was just teasing you a bit. :)

A resource I recommend to help you tactically address your subject area needs is the GMAT Resources Directory. This directory has been carefully built over time to highlight some more of the most useful, free prep advice/material available on this community and on the web.

Additionally, if you are having trouble with a particular kind of question--like the one you cited in your original post--then I recommend using the Google search at the top right of this page to do an internal search containing that question prompt phrase to pull up specific results for those kinds of problems. I'm confident you find many examples of these kinds of questions in this community, with lots of advice from our smart members and experts on how to approach.

Finally, if you find yourself stuck on a problem. Just ask the community in the correct forum! We're here to help.

All the best,

retaking my gmat in dec08

by shub » Thu Oct 09, 2008 11:09 pm
hi Eric..
i really like reading your advisory posts i am in a position where in i badly need some advice.i took my GMAT on sept 30th after 3 months of prep.i was scoring 660-720 range in the gmat prep tests ,i used to dip to 620-640 as well at times.however the actual GMAT proved to be a diiferent story altogther and i ended with a very disappointing score of 570.i dont intend to give up and i have decided to retake the GMAT this time in december
My scores were
Verbal:27
Quans:42
i felt i did well on verbal ..and i was well paced in time for the first 1-15 questions ,but somewhere down the lane i messed up the time schedule i had charted out.i had to rush through the questions 20-30..in order to complete the test.i find the CR in verbal really tough..i have practiced quite a bit and my performance keeps varying each time in CR during mock tests i took up before the exam
now that i intend to retake the GMAT..please suggest some kind of a strategy for verbal ..i think i cld improve my quans as well..i am aiming for a 700+ this time and i really really want it..please advice on how i got to prepare.I have OG and kaplan with me.i recently went and got tow more books :Kaplan 800 Advanced prep and pearson gmat prep.Kindly advice on how i got to start out preparing this time.
