recent election

by vikram4689 » Wed Apr 25, 2012 8:24 am
A result of the recent election is realizing that in this increasingly urban areas, there is now more worry about crime than health care.

A: realizing that in this increasingly urban areas, there is now more worry about crime
B: the realization that in this increasingly urban areas, they now worry more about crime
C: the realization that in this increasingly urban areas, voters now worry more about crime
D: a realizing that in this increasingly urban areas, there is now more concern about crime
E: the realization that in this increasingly urban areas, concerns about crime are greater

[spoiler]doesn't E maintains ||ism using ellipses -> concerns about crime are greater than [concerns about] health care[/spoiler]

Please underline the portion of the sentence that is to be corrected/reviewed. The question is:

A result of the recent election is realizing that in this increasingly urban areas, there is now more worry about crime than health care.

A: realizing that in this increasingly urban areas, there is now more worry about crime
B: the realization that in this increasingly urban areas, they now worry more about crime
C: the realization that in this increasingly urban areas, voters now worry more about crime
D: a realizing that in this increasingly urban areas, there is now more concern about crime
E: the realization that in this increasingly urban areas, concerns about crime are greater

IMO C.

I think the correct comparison is using more than and not greater than because greater than is usually used to compare " a number of things, or when numbers are involved".

Hope its the right one!

OA C. Did you mean that since concern is a countable entity more should be used in E

A: realizing that in this increasingly urban areas, there is now more worry about crime
B: the realization that in this increasingly urban areas, they now worry more about crime
C: the realization that in this increasingly urban areas, voters now worry more about crime . Correct construction --> Worry more about X than Y. here X and Y are comparable.
D: a realizing that in this increasingly urban areas, there is now more concern about crime awkward and wordy
E: the realization that in this increasingly urban areas, concerns about crime are greater than [health care]
Greater than can be used to compare two different entities. but in this the entities compared are not parallel. here the sentence compares Concerns with Health care. This is incorrect comparison. We can correct it saying that concerns about crime are greater than that of health care.

SC Tip:
increase/decrease : change in the same entity.
greater/more than : comparing two different entities.

should it be ...in this increasingly urban area, not areas? I'm confused why there is an S on area. Isn't the sentence saying this.... area?

Eliminate A and D - Wrong usage of realisation
Eliminate B - antecedent of the pronoun 'they' is missing

Now I am left with C and E. Then eliminated E because of:

1) Error in comparison rule. E compares 'concerns' to 'health care'

Whereas C uses the right idiom " worry more about X than Y"

Isn't it the case of ellipses where exact words are avoided
concerns about crime are greater than [concerns about] health care
