THAT usage/rule

In addition to having more protein -than wheat does, the protein in rice is higher quality than that in wheat,with more of the amino acids essential to the human diet.

(A) the protein in rice is higher quality than that in
(B) rice has protein of higher quality than that in
(C) the protein in rice is higher in quality than it is in
(D) rice protein is higher in quality than it is in
(E) rice has a protein higher in quality than

B

I am unable to understand the rule in B

What is the rule "rice has protein of higher quality than that in"

how is that in used

There are no rules in SC. Its all about the usage that will impart proper meaning.

Well this is an comparison question.

Please see this following sentence :

I drive faster than my wife.
I drive car faster that my wife -- you drive car faster than you drive your wife...hahaha...this is not what we meant to say.

I drive my car faster than my wife does --- this is correct

but please note this sentence :

I love videogames more than my wife
I love videogames more than my wife does

Here both are correct, as both these sentence are logically posible.

So there are no rules in SC !!

Now consider these sentence :

The population of China is greater than that of India. -- "that" refer to population.
If you write -- The population of China is greater than India. -- this is wrong as you are comparing the population of the two countries and this sentence compare India and china - so you need a demonstrative pronoun "that" or "those" in these type of sentence.

The total mass of all the asteroids is less than that of the Moon. here "that" refer to "mass".

B is similar to these two sentence.

Now I hope you got why you need "that" in B and the type of construction that is working in B.

This is definitelt not an answer. I am just adding to the discussion.

I think "that" is refering to "protein" -> the closest noun.

The population of China is greater than that of India. --> in this example population of ... that of... a clear parallelism is present. Also, the population is the subject of the sentence, so connect between "that" and population is quite apparent.

Where as in Choice(B) --> its a confusing construction for some of the folks like me;

Also, not sure the following constructions are ok -

rice has protein of higher quality than that of wheat. // changed "in" -> "of"
rice has higher quality protein than wheat has. ;// does this sounded more like -> wheat has ( rice of higher quality..)

I completely agree with you, but do you find any other choice better than B.
