Is this generally recommended? I just submitted my Columbia recommendation and was thinking about asking my co-worker who attended Columbia to send an email to the Adcom. Could this potentially backfire on me?

If the individual knows you well and can clearly articulate your strengths, successes, and goals, then you should consider having them write one of your letters of recommendation.
