Hi Stacy,

I am Rohit from India. Am working for an IT company since last two years. I started my preparations for GMAT in mid-April. It was all going well when suddenly mid way through my preparations i was put on a project which eats up almost all of my time (Morning 9 - 10:30 in the night), leaving me with no time to study, atleast during the weekdays.

Earlier i had planned to write GMAT in june-end or july first-week but due to the extension of my project committments i was forced to postpone it till july last week. But the project has been postponed again till august 1st week and now i dont have any other option except postponing it again because i feel i need about 15 - 20 days of free time prior to GMAT.

Stacy, My aim is to kick off my MBA in august, 2010 (i.e. next Fall). So considering this, please suggest that till which month (maximum) i can afford to postpone my plans to write GMAT if i plan to apply for next year's fall intake.

Please help coz ur valuable inputs would really help me to decide about GMAT date and also plan accordingly.

Thanks a lot (Anticipating that you would reply!!.. :) )
Cheers!!
Rohit

Dear Rohit,

You want to apply in the second round at the latest, so that will be somewhere in the December-January timeframe. If you want to have the option of retaking the GMAT prior to applying, then you will want to take your first test by September 15. Since you can only take the test once every 31 days, then that would give you time between October 16 and November 20 for a retake. If you want to apply in the first round, then you really need to take the GMAT by the end of August.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Thanks a lot for replying. I really appreciate that. If you can throw some more light on the advantages/disadvantages of applying in both the rounds and which round is beneficial for the applicants, that will be great. I want to give my best shot in the first attempt itself so just want to consider all the possibilities before registering for GMAT. Also, please provide me with your personal opinion about the round (first or second) that i should target to write GMAT.

Awaiting your reply..
Cheers!!
Rohit

There is not an advantage to first round versus second round at most schools. However, there is a disadvantage to applying after the second round because the competition increases for the remaining seats. Essentially, you are dealing with probabilities and the later it gets into the admissions cycle, the less seats are available to be offered to applicants. Thus there is some advantage to applying in rounds 1 or 2 as there are more seats available than in subsequent rounds. Since you are from an over-represented subset of the applicant pool, I think either round will work for you, but would suggest applying as early as possible.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thanks a ton for ur opinion. I have some more queries, please oblige :
1. Is it fine, considering round1, if i write GMAT in AUGUST last week and TOEFL by 10th september. If not, please feel free to recommend the dates (approximation) that u think wud be ideal keeping round 1 in mind.
2. How much time the application process takes till the point of sending it to the Universities.
3. What is the approximate deadline for applying in Round1 and Round2.

Cheers!!

Dear Rohit,

The answer to all of your questions is "it depends". Schools have different deadlines, so you will need to check with each school you plan to apply to for what their deadlines are. Likewise, you won't know if your test dates will work until you know the deadlines. It takes about 3 weeks from your test date for a school to receive the official score report from the testing service. As for how much time you will need to write your applications, that depends on how well you write and how much time you can devote to the process. It never hurts to start as soon as you can and submit your applications early.

Regards,
Lisa

- Courses offered
- Information about placements of previous batches.
- Fee structure
- Scholarships offered
- Finally, if possible, What kind of profile they regard as a good profile?
