At a certain baseball game, each of the spectators is either a Bullfrog fan or a Chipmunk fan, and no one is both. What is the ratio of Bullfrogs fans to Chipmunk fans among spectators at the baseball game?

1) The number of Chipmunks fans among the spectators is 20% greater than the number of Bullfrogs fans.
2) The total number of spectators at the baseball game is 4000.

Say there are B no. of Bullfrog fans and C no. of Chipmunk fans. We have to get the value of B : C.

Let's take each statement one by one.

1) The number of Chipmunks fans among the spectators is 20% greater than the number of Bullfrogs fans.

C = 120% of B => C = 6B/5 => B/C = 5/6. Sufficient.

2) The total number of spectators at the baseball game is 4,000.

B + C = 4,000. However, we can't get the value of B : C. Insufficient.

Though we answered the question correctly, the figure 4,000 in Statement 2 is inconsistent with the information given in Statement 1. The total no. of spectators must be a multiple of 11. We see that 4,000 is not a multiple of 11.

Let's get this.

From Statement 1, we have C = 6B/5. Thus, B + C = B + 6B/5 = 11B/5

Equating 11B/5 to 4,000, we get B = 20,000/11 = not an integer. Since no. of fans is an integer, the total no. of spectators must not be 4,000.

In a DS question, the question narration, Statement 1 and Statement 2, together make a holistic situation.

The correct answer: A
