Why doesn't the following equation work correctly for this problem:

If a copier can make 3 copies every 2 seconds, how long will it take to make 40 copies?

3/2=40/x

I get an answer of 80/3 seconds... but I think it should be 60 seconds. Why isn't the ratio method working?

There is nothing wrong with the rate formula that you used. You got the problem right.

Maybe this will make you see that you got the correct answer:

3 copies every 2 seconds.

So that also means that 30 copies are made in 20 secs.

10 more copies are still needed. So at this same rate, it will take the copier a little more than 6 seconds to complete the job.

Which is the same answer that you got, 80/3.
