GMATPREP score - guidance needed

by rogue_rohit » Thu Dec 11, 2008 4:19 am
I just gave my first GMAT prep test. I still have 25 days to go for my actual GMAT. My Score in GMATPREP was

Quant 48
Verbal 42
Total 740

Being an engineer and good at Maths, I should be able to push my Quant score to 50 or 51. If I can achieve that, what prospective score I should be targeting then?

Then I made 5 mistakes in verbal and all of them were in SC. I have read through Manhattan Sentnce correction guide and OG. Is there something else I can do to improve my skills in SC?

740 is a fantastic score for your first GMATPrep - a lot of members would kill for that score! If you get a 50/51 Q and maintain a 42 V you should score in the 760-770 range I believe. If you need to focus more on SC, I recommend going back to the basics and studying the foundational items again. At the level you're performing at, I'm not even sure what hints to provide you - I can only suggest doing what you're already doing because it's working.

I agree, a 51Q and 42V would likely be a 760 or 770. Still, a 740 is a fantastic score for your first try!!!

For sentence correction, your main focus should be spotting the handful of common errors as quickly and accurately as possible. Change your approach from "it sounds right" to "I know this answer is right because it uses _____."

Another helpful tip (this goes for all verbal) is just to start reading more. You'll develop an "eye" for good grammar and improve your skills for RC and CR, to boot.

Good luck!

Thanks Guys - I am now getting better in Quantitative section and scoring 50-51 in it. My undergrad CGPA is quite low, hence I want to boost this GMAT score as much as possible. Otherwise, I would have been quite happy with a 740 score. :)

Jim: I have been trying to do what you have suggested for SC. However, being a non-native English speaker, I face most issues in identifying correct idioms and it has been my undoing in SC for far.
