Many analysts have recently predicted that democratic institutions will develop in China, as the growth of democracy has generally followed industrial development in other countries throughout the 20th century.
"¢ has generally followed industrial development
"¢ generally followed industrial development
"¢ had generally followed industrial development
"¢ generally follows industrial development
"¢ followed general industrial development

OA - B

I am confused with options A and B and lastly selected A.

Why "has" is wrong here ? :(
If you cant explain it simply you dont understand it well enough!!!

Hi Ganesh,

Let's get to the basic - present perfect tense is used when an action begins in the past and has a continued affect in the present.

Here, the growth of democracy followed industrial development in '20th century'. The growth has already been accomplished. It is not continuing now. Hence simple past tense suits this sentence.

Hence B
