European Applicants

by Hessegebbabel » Sun Jul 18, 2010 6:09 am
Hi all,

one often hears about the relative abundance of "Indian IT Males" and "White IB / Consultants" with "high numbers (GMAT / GPA)" in the applicant pool of top 20 programms in the US.

I'd like to hear sombody's take on the admissions chances of Western European applicants from somewhat less common backgrounds (such as manufacturing) compared to the groups mentioned above.

(For simplicity, let's assume that appart from the demographics and workexperience everything else is equal)

I look forward to hearing your opinions.

Nils

To the extent that your odds of acceptance are related to the size of the pool you are in, being a European with a non-technical background should be an advantage. Business schools seek to build diversity in their student bodies because that improves the quality of discussion in and out of the classroom. Admissions will still depend on multiple factors above and beyond your "pool size". Obviously, no specific experiential or geographic background is a guarantee. You would still need to show strong academic ability (GMAT/GPA), an excellent work track record, glowing references, and, above all, killer essays. Your geographic or career diversity will be no help unless you can demonstrate their value in your essays. As you recognize, they will certainly not compensate for deficiencies. An experienced admissions consultant can guide you through the sometimes harrowing process of demonstrating (in 500 words or less) why you are the perfect candidate for a given program.

Good luck with your admissions effort and with your career.
