The following appeared as part of an annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, a processor of frozen
foods:
"Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become
more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day
service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And
since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its 25th birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to
minimize costs and thus maximize profits."
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.

In the annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, they have not provided the details which led to the decrease in processing cost over time.
The decrease in processing cost could be due to many reasons, such as better equipment used, lowering of raw materials, cheap labor cost due to new machines being employed
being utilized over time.

So the report certainly does not confirm the exact reason for lowering of processing cost with time.

The comparison of food processing cost with color film processing is also not a valid comparison.
The cost of color print was 50 cents for five day service in 1970, and 20 cents for one day service in 1984. So for 5 days of service in 1984, it will cost 80 dollars,
without any discount. So the price actually increased.

Also in the report it is not mentioned whether the fall in color film processing was witnessed in same period of time and in same region as in which olympic food operates.

To conclude the annual report submitted is flawed, as it does not provide details of factors that led to decrease in food processing cost.Also the comparison with color film
processing cost is not genuine. Even though Olympic food will be soon celebrating their 25th birthday, it does not necessarily means that their food processing cost will come down, and
decrease in food processing cost is not a clear indicator that they have become more efficient with time.
