GRE-> GMAT, Quant Review, Skills Practice

by edyoung924 » Thu Aug 15, 2013 2:12 pm
Hi All,

Without dredging up threads that are well over a year old, I was looking for some help on getting my start on the GMAT. I took the GRE last fall (the newest iteration of the CAT GRE) and did well for my purposes. However, my quant skills are lacking. I was a lit major in UG and did little to prepare for the GRE, perhaps a total of 12-15 hrs of studying. I scored 166V 154Q 6.0AW (96, 57, 99%iles, respectively). I was strong in math in high school, with a 760Q on my SAT and several AP math courses, but I took minimal math in college and seem to have lost my ability.

In any event, has anyone taken both the recent CAT GMAT and GRE and can compare the verbal and AW sections? My second questions is, as a non-quant, what is the best way to sharpen my quant skills outside of taking tons of Q sections for practice? To be clear, I understand the principles and formulas, but I'm way, way out of practice, so I'm not needing to learn anything new, just drill, drill drill.

EDIT: I also took the LSAT in UG "just to see" and did fine on it (165), especially on RC and CR questions. From the GMAT questions I've played around with on the web, it seems like GMAT CR questions could easily also be LSAT CR questions. I probably spent 40-60 hrs preparing for the LSAT.

All advice is appreciated, folks!

Thanks

Hi ed,

Before you put together a big plan, you should take some time to answer the following questions:

1) Why do you want an MBA? Do you have a specific field, emphasis or overall goal?
2) Which schools best match your plans?
3) Do those schools accept both the GRE and GMAT or just the GMAT?

The answers to those questions will help you to define what your Test Prep Study Plan needs to be (and it's quite possible that your current GRE score would be enough for some of the schools that you're considering). Since you already have some exposure to the GRE, you might consider sticking to that exam (if it fits your needs).

As an aside, you can take a free GMAT CAT from a number of sources, the most realistic of which would be the 2 free CATs that you can download from MBA.com.

If you have any additional questions and/or you need help putting together a study plan, then feel free to contact me directly.
