Resume Question

by Travis_1234567890 » Fri Jan 16, 2009 10:15 am
I have a few resume questions-

Thank you in advance for your help! :D

1) I have 8 publications/conference presentations, should I mention these on my resume?

2) I am barely able to get my resume on two pages, should I try to limit my resume to 1 page?

3) Should I include positions held during undergrad and graduate school (e.g., lab instructor, research assistant, teaching assistant, etc)

4) Would you recommend placing my extracurricular actives under my education section (e.g., captain of the XYZ club)?

Dear Travis,

Ideally, a one page resume is best. I would encourage you to think of your resume as your personal highlight reel--it is not meant to be an exhaustive list of every job with every task listed. It should be focused on how you added value in each job, highlight managerial skills, and showcase accomplishments. Jobs held during your undergraduate studies are not important; jobs held during your graduate work might be depending on what you did. If you do not have any transferable skills from those roles, then you might just list them under the education section with your graduate degree.

As for publications and conference presentations, my question to you is how are they relevant to getting your MBA and your career goals post-MBA? If so, then you might need to make room for them. But if they are not, then perhaps it is best to leave off or include that you have 8 publications and presented at conferences in relation to the degree you were pursuing when you published. The other alternative is to put your publications in an "other" section. This is the section where you would also put any current involvement with nonprofits or hobbies. Leadership in clubs during college is best in your education section under that school.

Good luck,
Lisa
