GMAT Score Balance

by matt1225 » Mon Dec 29, 2008 2:51 pm
I did extremely well on the verbal section of the GMAT (95th percentile) and much worse on the verbal (61st percentile). Overall my score is 680. I am applying to IU Kelley, USC Marshall and UVA Darden.

I did well in math courses in college and majored in Economics, however I am not sure this is necessarily enough to mitigate a low quant. score. Can anyone comment on how this may affect my chances? I am not asking if this score will necessarily get me in (obviously it won't), more specifically I am asking if the low quant. will specifically keep me out of these programs.

Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you mean that you got 61% on the quant. I don't think your quant score will hurt you at Kelley if your grades in your quant classes were good. It could hurt you at Darden and Marshall. Hard to say. I think your concerns are justified, but i also think that you should just go ahead and apply. Hopefully your quant grades and work experience will be impressive enough to compensate for the quant score. I don't think you have the time to retake and apply R2.

Best,
Linda

Thanks for your quick reply Linda. Just curious, does a school sending you collateral mean anything outside of they saw your overall score and liked it? I know the GMAT asks for a lot of information before you take the test, but I wasn't sure what schools look at, although I am sure it varies. Any info you can give is appreciated.

It probably means you meet certain basic criteria and they would like an app from you. It means NOTHING about your chances of acceptance.

Best,
Linda
