Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France derives from nuclear power, while in Germany it is just
over 33 percent.

(A) while in Germany it is just over 33 percent
(B) compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent
(C) whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany
(D) whereas just over 33 percent of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany
(E) compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33 percent

OA is C

Could an expert explin what is wrong with E ? It looks gramatically and logically correct.

in E "it" doesnt has a clear antecedent i.e can refer to either "energy" or "nuclear power"..........

A. it does not have clear antecedent
B. which uses just over 33 percentage = of what? not clear
E. it does not have clear antecedent

Now, I cannot eliminate D, whats the logic here?

like many other i also choose D, honestly D is very lurking one.

See it is easy to gel to C and D, as the statements clearly require a contrast which is given by whereas in C and D, the other options, while, compared to etc are incorrect.

Also as other have mentiobned "it" in A and E is ambigious while, which in B means "Germay uses just over 33 percent" of what?

Only subtility in C is emphasized use of nuclear power , though I am not convinced what is wrong with D? iS IT the contrast requires nuclear power to be in subject>

Great discussion, all - here's a note on D that I think is pretty interesting:

Look at the placement of "in Germany" there.

"...whereas just over 33 percent of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany"

This construction leaves "the energy" on its own...it's not really defined to whom or where that "the energy" belongs - "in Germany" modifies "nuclear power", but isn't tied back to the "33% of the energy"...that modifier is too local.

Choice C tweaks that so that "in Germany" is part of the modifier "of the energy produced in Germany", so it ties that all together to make a clear statement.

It's a subtle distinction but worth being aware of - D's positioning of the modifier makes for an unclear meaning.
