If p + q = r, what is the value of q?
(1) p = 31
(2) r + 31 = p

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient but Statement (2) ALONE is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient but Statement (1) ALONE is not sufficient.
C. BOTH Statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER Statement alone is sufficient.
D. Each Statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Yeah...q is basically the difference between p and r. Statement 2 tells you exactly what that is.

Statement 2 gives you p - r = 31

and the question stem is q = r - p

You can get the answer from this? Thanks.

If p + q = r, what is the value of q?
(1) p = 31
(2) r + 31 = p

Given p+q=r which means q=r-p

r+31=p which means r-p=-31

So q = -31

I guess you moved 'r' in the opposite direction. Even if you did so and p-r=31, multiply with -1 on both sides to get r-p=-31.
