Averages

by kvamsy » Wed Jul 22, 2009 9:44 am
Was 70 the average (arithmetic mean) grade on a class test?
(1) On the test, half of the class had grades below 70 and half of the class had grades above 70.
(2) The lowest grade on the test was 45 and the highest grade on the test was 95.

Could anyone please explain the solution. When I am trying to solve i am getting ans as B but the answer is different

Lets pretend that there are 6 students in the class. Half (3) got less than 70 and the other half(3) got more than 70.
Ex. 1 Grades - 10, 25, 37, 71, 89, 99 avg=55
Ex. 2 Grades - 44, 44, 70, 75, 85, 88 avg=67

Can you see that we don`t know exactly what was the pattern of the grades? We only have the range, which doesnt really help...
Hope it`s clear
