If x and y are nonzero integers, what is the remainder when x is divided by y ?

(1) When x is divided by 2y, the remainder is 4.

(2) When x + y is divided by y, the remainder is 4.

I had absolutely no idea on how to solve this.. PLS HELP

OA is B

Say, x = ay + b, where b < y.
Therefore, when x is divided by y, the remainder is b.

Statement 1: When x is divided by 2y, the remainder is 4. This implies 4 < 2y.
Now there arises two cases,
(1) 4 < y. As 4 is less than y, 4 can not be further divided by y. Therefore,when x is divided by y, the remainder is also 4.
(2) 4 > y. As 4 is greater than y, 4 can be further divided by y and the remainder will be accordingly.

Not SUFFICIENT.

Statement 2: When (x+y) is divided by y, the remainder is 4.
We have assumed, x = ay + b
Therefore, (x+y) = ay + b + y = (a+1)y + b
=> When (x+y) is divided by y, the remainder is also b.
=> b = 4.

SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is B.
