In a store, apples are sold at 2 different rates, 2 apples for 60 cents and 3 apples for 75 cents. Tom bought 2 apples and Fred bought 3 apples. When compared to Fred, what is the percentage difference in the cost per apple which Tom bought?
A. 10%
B. 20%
C. 25%
D. 16.67%
E. 15%

My dilemma with this problem is should we divide by Tom's price to get D or by Fred's price to get B.

2 apples for 60 cents.

3 apples for 75 cents.

Tom -2apples-60 cents-->1 apple-30 cents

Fred -3apples-75 cents-->1 apple-25 cents

25[1+x/100]=30

1+x/100=6/5

x/100=1/5

x=20%

When compared to Fred,there is 20% cost difference which tom bought

When x is compared to y for a percent, y goes to the denominator. Order matters in comparison cases.

Tom for 30 and Fred for 25 while answering our chief query here, the constant difference of 5 when compared to Fred, who is 25, gives the percentage difference in the cost per apple which Tom bought
