This is a rumor that has floated around for years, but it's just that - a rumor and nothing more. Bschools look at so much more than GMAT scores when evaulating a candidate. All business school adcoms take 3 things into consideration: Academics (including GMAT, undergrad and grad school GPA, additional coursework), Experience (quality of professional experience to date as relevent to their tenure and peers), and Extracurriculars (this includes personal interests as well as involvement in activities such as volunteer work). All of these factors and others (including team and leadership skills) go into the interview invitation decision. Still, having a great GMAT score doesn't hurt, but it's not the only factor used in the decision making process.

In my 7 years of helping clients and learning from admissions folks, I cannot confirm this to be the case. In fact, I know of candidates with 770 GMATS who did not get interviews at all anywhere. So I agree with Stacey, it is your entire package that is evaluated.
