I am a "resident alien" (non-US citizen) and am planning to apply this fall to US schools. I have been working in the US on a work permit for close to 6 years now. I have just around 6 months left in my H1-B work-related 6-year stay here. Research has shown that if my 6 years of H1 expire, in order to apply for another H1, I would need to stay out of the US for at least 1 year in order to reset the counter back to 6 years for the next H1 application.
My question is - how do companies typically handle this? Do they try and sponsor a green card as soon as the OPT ends or employment begins? (Assuming all else - excellent performance in MBA, great interviews, great internship, etc).
I feel I am at a disadvantage since I have very little time left on my H1, so I want to carefully consider my options before deciding to apply in the US.
Any guidance or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
