Help with work experience.....

by TL2008 » Fri Oct 23, 2009 12:36 pm
Hi, I would like some advice and appreciate any responses.

- Just graduated in 2008, 23 years old.
- BA in Philosophy from a top public university with original plan to go to law school.
- I am now realizing that pursuing an MBA is more aligned with my career goals. I am very interested in commercial construction and my ultimate goal would be to have my own commercial development firm.
- I want to build up my work experience but I'm not really sure what kind of job to pursue that would also help me in getting into an MBA program.
- Currently I am interviewing for a personal banker position with Wells Fargo and also have a job offer from D.R.Horton as a National Credit Policy Manager.
- I'm kind of at a loss with which job to pursue from an MBA standpoint? Or if I need to go in another direction completely?
- I don't have a lot of informed advice around me and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Dear TL2008,

You need to pick the job you are most interested in and where you can gain some experience relevant to your future goals. There is not a preferred industry or job for MBA programs. What matters is what you do in your job--do you progress in your career? have you gained a breadth and depth of experience? have you added value to your organization? Evaluate your options against that criteria, and you should have your answer.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa. I appreciate your insight. I have only recently started exploring an MBA as an option and this forum is a great resource. I have another question, that may be dumb but I need to know the answer, is it frowned upon by admissions committees to apply to the same school's MBA program and law school for the same year(I don't mean joint degree JD/MBA program)? Thanks for all your help.

It is not "frowned on" per se, but you do run a risk that both schools will question your interest. In other words, each admissions office might wonder if you are truly interested in its program. While it is possible neither will know you applied to the other, I would say it is more likely that both schools will know. As long as you are comfortable with that risk, then you can submit to both.

Regards,
Lisa
