Hi

It seems that some good B-schools in UK do not need GMAT as a mandatory entry requirement (eg. Strathclyde University). For some people like me, a top tier US or UK school is out of reach due to funding issues. Keeping this population in mind would you advise students with 5+ years of full time work experience to go for these B-schools that do not need GMAT but stresses more on your undergrad GPA and work ex? I mean would they loose out on anything in terms of prospects if they cannot anyhow afford the top few (like LBS, Hardvard, Wharton etc.). I'm trying not to be very specific in terms of B-school names but aren't Strathclyde MBA courses at per with the likes of Warwick or Nottingham or Cranfield?
I'd highly appreciate your valuable opinion.

Thanks
Anirban

Dear Anirban,

I am probably not the best person to answer this question as I am not as familiar with UK schools as US schools. However, generally speaking there is a correlation between admissions standards and perceived (if not actual) quality of education. In other words, business schools must have certain admissions standards in order to receive certain accreditation or be seen as being at a level of quality in the eyes of employers. Whether or not the coursework is on par between one school to another is debatable, but in terms of perception amongst companies that hire MBAs, I do think there is a bias towards schools that have certain standards. Having said that, you need to determine if this is even an issue worth spending time on in your case. In other words, think about why you want your MBA and what your career goals are. If Strathclyde University provides the education and career connections you seek, then it would be a viable option for you.

Good luck,
Lisa
