In the Excel Manufacturing Company, 46 percent of the employees are men. If 60 percent of the employees are unionized and 70 percent of these are men, what percent of the non-union employees are women?

(A) 90%

(B) 87.5%

(C) 66.7%

(D) 50%

(E) 36%

I plugged in 100 for the total.

Red numbers in the attached table were figured out by multiplying the percentages given in the question by 100. From there is just filling in holes.

I don't know what to say, really. Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives. You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. I'll tell you this, in any fight it's the guy whose willing to die whose gonna win that inch. That's football guys, that's all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?

Let the total # of employees be x

0.46x are men and 0.54 are woment.

0.6x are unionised and 0.4x and not

number of unionised employees who are men
(0.6)(0.7)(x)

Total number of men=unionised men+non unionised men
0.46x=(0.6)(0.7)(x)+non unionised men
non unionised men=0.46x-0.42x=0.04x

Out of 0.4x non unionised employees, 0.04x are men...So total number of non unionsed women=0.4-0.04=0.36

percent of the non-union employees that are women=0.36/0.40*100=
90%
Answer is A

Can solve using smart numbers as well. Let the total number of employees be 1000
460 are men 540 are women
600 are unionised and 400 are not
70% of unionised employees are men hence
420 unionised employees are men

Total number of men=unionised men+non unionised men
460=420+non unionised men
non unionised men=40
So out of 400 non unionsed employess 40 are men hence 360 are women
percent of the non-union employees that are women=360/400*100=90% Hence
A
Hi-- Can you please check the OA. It has to be A. 36% is the percentage of women who are not unionized out of total WOMEN employee in the company.

90% is the percentage of non-unionized women out of the total non-unionized EMPLOYEES. This is what your question is asking.

This is how I solved this: -

Total employees = X
Total Men= 0.46X
Total Women= 0.54X

Total unionized = 0.6X (GIVEN)
Total non-unionized employee= 0.4x
Total unionized Men = 0.7*0.6X = 0.42X
Total unionized Women = 0.18X

Therefore, Total non-unionized women out of total women employees = 0.54x-0.18x = 0.36x

PERCENTAGE of non-unionized women out of total non-unionized employee

(0.36x)/(0.4x) = 90%

Hence, Answer should be option A

Use a group grid to organize the information.
Let total = 100.

Insert the given information into the grid:
46 percent of the employees are men
60 percent of the employees are unionized
70 percent of these are men

Image

All of the numbers in the grid must add up horizontally and vertically.
Complete the grid:

(Non-union women)/(Total non-union) = 36/40 = 9/10 = 90%.

The correct answer is A.
