Knewton inference 3

by itsmebharat » Wed Jun 01, 2011 12:27 am
he FDA recently banned the use of a certain imitation butter because it carried with it certain health risks. As a result, Splendid Foods can no longer use the imitation butter in its cookies. Therefore, Splendid Foods' cookie production costs will rise, since real butter costs substantially more than the imitation butter.

The argument relies on which of the following assumptions?

* (A)

The FDA recently banned the use of a certain imitation butter.
* (B)

Splendid Foods' new cookies will be made with real butter
* (C)

Splendid Foods can no longer use the imitation butter in its cookies.
* (D)

Splendid Foods' cookie production costs will rise.
* (E)

Real butter costs substantially more than imitation butter.

OA B

The argument relies on which of the following assumptions?

* (A)This is already given in passage so no point of assumptions.

The FDA recently banned the use of a certain imitation butter.
* (B) Correct, use the negation test here. The arguments concludes that the cookies will cost more because they will be made of butter. If you negate this option the entire conclusion falls apart. Thus, correct.

Splendid Foods' new cookies will be made with real butter
* (C)Again implied in the passage.

Splendid Foods can no longer use the imitation butter in its cookies.
* (D)Again said in the passage.

Splendid Foods' cookie production costs will rise.
* (E)Again stated in passage. Well this one sounds to be contender and a trap answer. To pick up this option we have to be sure that cookies will be made of real butter only and no other options exist. Thus, not correct. Moreover, if you apply the negation test, it doesnot hurt the conclusion.

Real butter costs substantially more than imitation butter.

OA B
Hope it helps.

B is the right answer.
In all Assumption questions,look for the conclusion-evidence gap.

For example, in this question the author concludes that the production costs will rise, and the evidence is that real butter costs more than imitation butter.
Therefore, the fact that splendid's new cookies will be made of real butter is an assumption.
