Arrest Record

by Neo Anderson » Sun Dec 11, 2011 4:33 pm
In the course of her researches, a historian recently found two documents
mentioning the same person, Erich Schnitzler. One, dated May 3, 1739, is a
record of Schnitzler's arrest for peddling without a license. The second, undated,
is a statement by Schnitzler asserting that he has been peddling off and on for 20
years.

The facts above best support which of the following conclusions?

(A) Schnitzler started peddling around 1719.
(B) Schnitzler was arrested repeatedly for peddling.
(C) The undated document was written before 1765.
(D) The arrest record was written after the undated document.
(E) The arrest record provides better evidence that Schnitzler peddled than does
the undated document.

OA after some discussion

Schnitzler was first arrested in 1739 (because there is no other reference of arrest before that). So 20 years after that should be around 1759. Also there is no proof that he was arrested more than once. He just asserted that he has been peddling for 20 years.

===1719 <(undated document)===date document in 1739====== (undated document) < 1759===1965

From this chart, undated document in () express POSSIBILITY. We can see that only choice C is the correct answer.

Dated document 1739; 20 yrs off & on. It means in the earliest possibility he might hv started peddling from 1719 or worst possibility from 1759. So A not true
(B) Schnitzler was arrested repeatedly for peddling.

We cannot say whether he was arrested repeatedly
(C) The undated document was written before 1765.

Dated document 1739; 20 yrs off & on. It means in the earliest possibility he might hv started peddling from 1719 or worst possibility from 1759. That means in both cases we can say undated document written before 1765.
(D) The arrest record was written after the undated document.

Not necessary - updated record migh hv been written after 1739 (say 1745), but still both statments will be true
(E) The arrest record provides better evidence that Schnitzler peddled than does the undated document.
No infomation abt which record is a better document

It has to be C.

He was arrested for peddling in 1739. And the second document says he has been peddling for 20 yrs. So even if he started peddling in 1739, the newest the document could be is 1759. So we can (only) safely say that the undated document was written before 1765.

C !
