DS - Wages

by mrkylee » Fri Jan 04, 2008 2:44 pm
jack and mark both received hourly wage increases of 6 percent. after the wage increase, jack's hourly wage was how many dollars per hour more than mark's?

1. before the wage increases, jack's hourly wage was $5.00 per hour more than mark's.

2. before the wage increases, the ratio of jack's hourly wage to mark's hourly wage was 4 to 3.

I think the answer is C.

1) is insuff. We dont know anything about mark

2) is insuff. We know the ratio but not know the actual number of dollars

Taking both statements together we can solve the problem

I agree that it's A)

Let X=Mark's original wage

Jack's original wage =X+5

Mark's new wage = (1.06)X
Jack's new wage = (1.06)(X+5) = 1.06X + 5.30

Difference between Jack's new wage and Mark's new wage = Y

Y=(1.06X + 5.30) - 1.06X
Y=$5.30

It is indeed A. I read wrong statement 1.

Now that I have read it properly...i still have to say that i find your aproach really interesting Tud.

I just thought that if I know:
a) the wage difference between them before the raise (5$)
b) both get the same raise in % (6%)
c) then the new raise difference has to be 6% of 5$=0.30$
5$+0.30$=5.30$

But seeing your algebraic explanation I think is better!!

By the way when do you guiys plan to take the exam??

Actually I originally looked at it like you did, then I thought up the equation to try and confirm that I was on the right track. :) I have a tendency to skip steps in my head, which gets me to the answer quicker, unforatunately it's not always the right one. Right now I'm running around 620-640 on the practice tests from the McGraw Hill GMAT book I got from the library (came with 6 practice tests on CD), I write in 11 days and still have a long way to go. I'm pretty good in math if I read the question right, although I can't alway articulate how I got the answer, sentence correction is another story.

You write in 11 days means you are taking the exam in 11 days?

Good luck!
