is x^3 > y ? ds question

by mitzwillrockgmat » Wed May 19, 2010 10:23 pm
If x and y are positive, is x^3 > y?
(1) sq root x > y
(2) x > y

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Please provide a detailed explaination! Thanks :)

from 1
Let us take x=1/4. and y=1/3..then sq root x is 1/2...so sq root x > y

X^3=1/64...x^3<y

if x integer then x^3>y....not sufficient

from 2
let x=1/2 and y=1/3..x^3=1/8..so x^3<y
again if x is integer x^3>y...not sufficient

similarly we can show that together also the conditions are not sufficient

IMO ans option E
