Mrs T's Bonus Question

by mchaubey » Thu May 06, 2010 1:04 pm
When Mrs. T's students answer the bonus question correctly, she awards a bonus. If the base score is between 10 and 99, the bonus is equal to 2 times the tens digit in the base score. The last test Mrs. T scored was between 10 and 99, and the student answered the bonus question correctly. Was the bonus given greater than 17% of the base score?

(1) The base score of the test was between 50 and 90.

(2) Mrs. T added 16 bonus points to the last test she graded.

I beleive the answer would be B.

(1)the score was 50-90

From the passage the bonus is 2x the tens digit of the base score. Thus,

2(ten digit)=bonus.

For grade in 50, bonus = 5*2 = 10. 10 point would be 20% of base score (10/50=1/5). If it was a 59, 10/59= slightly under 17%. Thus for 50s the bonus could be ~16.9%-20%. Calculating for 60s 70s and 80s.

60-69 70-79 80-89
20%-17.3% 20%-17.7% 20%-17.9%.

Thus, (1) is insufficient because the range is from 16.9-20%.

(2) Says that the student got an 80. Because of similar calculations done above, for any grade in the 80s the bonus will be >17%.

(2) is sufficient. B.

Also, a good way to figure out %s like 10/59, think about what the fraction is close to. Its close to 10/60=1/6=16.667% (i memorized these fraction you see relatively frequently, such as 1/6).. So you know that 10/59 will be close to that. Same thing with the other numbers.

1. Base score = 50
bonue is 10. so bonus score is 20% of base score

Base score = 59
bonue is 10. so bonus score is 16.94% of base score

the two answers are different. since the question does not talk abt the rounding the figures the option A,D is rules out

2. 16 bonus score means , her base score should be between
base score=80
then bonus score is 20% of base score

base score=89
then bonus score is 17.97% of base score
suff. B is the answer
