role play

by 7806 » Fri Oct 08, 2010 8:36 pm
1. She has been a contributing author in several textbooks like Clinical Images in IADVL Textbook of Dermatology, Clinical Images In Atlas Of Rheumatology by Dr VR Joshi, has co-authored the monogram on "Hirsutism", and authored 2 chapters in the Textbook on Gynecology and Adolescent Medicine.

>>>Ignore She as pronoun error. Except this, Could you please analyze the sentence...in light of GMAT Grammar?.
She has been (a contributing author in several textbooks)..... what role does this red part play in sentence...??
Also, is use of like correct here...(like or such as...)??

A similar sentence is below-
2. She has been a recipient of several awards at Local and National Conferences, and awarded the "Best Teacher Award" thrice.
....What does role play the red part sentence..??

Source-internet.
Thanks...and sorry if it is beyond the scope of GMAT.

it is simple. red color part can be considered a object of the sentence.
'such as' should be used when examples are mentioned. 'like' should be used to compare things.

From a structural standpoint,
She - Subject
has been - Verb
a - article / modifier modifying author
contributing - adjective / modifier modifying author
author - subject complement / predicate nominative
in - preposition
several - adjective / modifier modifying textbooks
textbooks - object of preposition.

The red part, from the point of view of grammar, is the subject complement. It renames the subject of the sentence in the predicate part.

A simple example -
She is an author.
Here, an author, in the predicate, renames the subject of the sentence.

Use of like is incorrect. To give examples, use such as.

Nope. The red part is the subject complement and not the object of the sentence. Look above for explanation.

The phrases in red are complements. The verb has been expresses a state of being. A verb that expresses a state of being equates two things; it says that the subject = the complement. The complement can be a noun, a noun phrase or an adjective. In the following examples, the words in red are all complements of the subject she:

She has been a contributing author.
She has been a recipient.
She appears happy.
She became the best runner in the town.
She will remain president.

To answer your second question: the use of like is incorrect. Like is used to compare things. To give examples, use such as.
