First of all thanks for taking the time!

I'm planning on applying to B school for fall 2013. Below are my summary stats. I'm planning to apply to (HBS/Columbia/Wharton/Stanford) and would appreciate if you could tell me my chances of getting in to any schools in my list, as well as your opinion on other schools where I might be a good fit. Thank you once again; your help is much appreciated!

I am a Puerto Rican male; bilingual (Spanish)

Academic:

Middle Tier Boston Business Undergrad (Think BU/BC/Bentey/Babson) GPA: 3.2 Finance GPA: 3.8 (had very strong upward trend after initial issues)
Co-founder and treasurer of Puerto Rican Student Association in college
Passed all CFA exam levels (I,II, & III) in a row by the age of 23
GMAT will take by end of month: I expect 690-740

Work experience (US Caribbean):
1.5 years as Special Assistant to Government Pension Fund Administrator and Chief Investment Officer While it was undergoing restructuring efforts and merging the administration with other local pension plans. (When I left I was offered the position of Director of the investments division (i.e. Assistant Deputy Administrator) but turned it down in order to be an analyst in a Private Equity Firm a job that was not as prestigious but it was where I saw myself in the future given my long term goals.

1.5 years analyst in Small Cap US Caribbean Private Equity Firm ($125 AUM) (The firm has been investing for over 20 years; very reputable in the region top quartile performance)
Good experience and will have excellent recommendation from the head partner, job function has evolved in to a more senior role. I have a lot of responsibilities and have had opportunities to lead (manage) projects and deals on my own; I will also be supervising some more junior people that are to come in in a couple of months.

Extracurricular activities all on-going:
3 years as Director at my brother's Company's Board just two directors me and my brother
We have weekly Sunday meetings; company is expected to break the $10 million in sales this year
Company has had very strong growth over 35% per year (100% bootstrapped no private capital); recently recognized by the Governor who issued a press conference honoring my brother

7 months as Member of the board/committee of a yearly fundraising wine and food festival for scholarships in my old high school, this past year net income from the festival totaled 65K

All help is greatly appreciated!

Best

Blue

Hey Blue,
Things are looking very good for you. You come from a not so common pool, you have very solid grades, what seems like very solid progression in your career, with leadership in banking (not that common before an MBA) and basically overall very solid. All you need to do now is get that GMAT score, and then of course build yourself a strong and unique application that captures your VOICE.

Given your background and involvement in the Puerto Rican community, applying through the Consortium might also be good for you:

Jon,

Thank you for the reply it was very helpful, I will definitely look into the consortium. On the side of school selection, do you think I should consider applying to other schools in addition to the ones I mentioned above?

Best,

Blue

Maybe Booth and Sloan and NYU as a "safety school"

Jon,

I did not understand your comment regarding the strong grades as I have been told that this is the most apparent weakness in my profile. Then I noticed that the way I wrote my GPA might have been confusing: my Cumulative GPA is 3.2 (3.16 to be exact) while my Finance concentration GPA is 3.8. Thought I'd clear this up to make sure you did not confuse my Cum. GPA with my Finance GPA. Will this cause me to be dinged at your Alma-matter (my top choice) given their focus on GPA?

Best,

Blue

PS: Sorry for not being clear

You are right that I did only see the 3.8 :) But although a 3.2 is not amazing, but it is by no means an application killer. If you can do well on the GMAT it will definitely help offset this lets call it "less that amazing, but still very good" GPA. They will want to see proof of your capacity to succeed academically, which is why a nice GMAT is so important, esp. since everything else is in order.

Jon,

Thank you for all of your help, I wanted to run a question by you. I sat for the GMAT today and scored a 710 (Q44,V42). Not an excellent quant score I was hoping for a Q47-Q48. Given that the exam is changing I feel reluctant (not the best use of my time) to retake the test to improve my quant section. My impression is that the adcoms will also take into account the fact that I passed all of the CFA examinations which are extremely quantitative in nature, and the fact that since I work in PE I deal with numbers and equations all day long.

Do you believe that my skewed score presents a problem given my profile? or should I just focus on my apps now?

PS: As an update to my stats I just got promoted to associate, and now have the responsibility of supervising an analyst (perhaps two, if we decide to hire a current candidate).

Thanks a million for all of your help.

Best,

Blue
