Profile Evaluation Please - Special Laid Off Edition!

Me: 28, Male, New York, Caucasian
Education : 3.6 GPA from Big Ten school, graduated with honors, member of school's Honor College. Major in Supply Chain Management.
GMAT: 600 (took 3 years ago), retaking first week of December, hoping to get around a 670
Experience: 2.5 years at IBM Consulting (successful, promoted, but left for more $$$), 1 year at boutique consulting shop (laid off), 2 years at another boutique consulting firm (laid off and currently out of work)

Target Schools:
-NYU
-U of M
-UT Austin
-USC
-INSEAD
-IESE
-Fordham or Rutgers (safety schools)

Any shot? How badly will being laid off hurt my chances? What do I need to do to improve my chances? Leaving IBM might have been a horrible mistake...

Hello,

Being laid off could hurt a bit, but it depends on what you've been doing in the meantime. If you've made creative and productive use of the time since - in other words, demonstrated you are proactive and resourceful - the negative impact could be minor to nil. If you don't have a lot to show for the time, it could be negative. Your list of target schools looks partially on target; I'd say NYU, Ross, and Insead would be reaches, probably reasonable, though I would need to know more details about your candidacy.

To strengthen your chances, the best thing would be to really use this time since being laid off productively. Also, If you can raise your GMAT a bit beyond 670 range, that would help, especially for NYU and Insead.
