760 GMAT (48 Q, 47 V) with 3.5 AWA - Help!

by dkplme » Wed Jun 19, 2013 2:49 am
I took the GMAT a couple of weeks ago and I was ecstatic with my score of 760 (99%): 48 Q (78%) and 47 V (99%). However, I recently received my official score and was completely disappointed and shocked with my extremely poor score of 3.5 on the AWA. I knew that I hadn't done as well on the essay because I had run out of time, but I still did not expect something that low. This is not at all indicative of my writing skills, as evidenced by my very strong verbal score, my academic performance (3.84 GPA from a top undergrad with good grades in English/writing courses), and my professional career to this point.

Now I have a dilemma on my hands and I am stressing out about it. I know that the AWA score is not heavily emphasized, but the 3.5 score is below the threshold that I've heard top schools are looking to see. Should I retake the GMAT and risk a lower overall score or can I overcome the AWA score by demonstrating my true writing ability on the essays and putting together a strong performance in the rest of the application process?

Thanks!

Hi,

The weight-age given to GMAT in b-school(s) admission process is not more than 15%-20%. Your GPA is fine as well. Therefore, I would advise to start applying in b-school(s) with this score. There is always a chance to improve the scores. But what if you score less? My sincere advice would be to focus on application essays and interviews (weight-age 60%-65%) rather than devoting time for GMAT preparations. Try your chances in b-school(s) by clicking https://bit.ly/12T2zZz

Let me know if this helps.

Regards
Erina

A 760 is a strong score, which the admissions committee will focus upon. Your 99% V corroborates your grades. Admissions committees will look at your 3.5 AWA score as an aberration.

Forget about retaking the GMAT and now focus on producing the best applications possible.

Good luck,

I would say don't take it again just for the AWA. Your verbal score on the gmat and your essays will help, and I may even address it in the optional essay to play some offense versus leaving it up to adcoms to make their own judgment. Looks like your writing is very good!

But for everybody else reading this who is applying, the AWA is generally not an issue unless you get a really low score. So don't ignore this aspect of the test, as you don't want to be in a position where a top school is wondering about your English and your writing.
