Whew! An Indian male who isn't an engineer! Congratulations!!!!!!!

In all seriousness, I think that is an advantage. Further, you seem to have a strong background as an architect, strong numbers (GMAT; don't worry too much about the IR for now), prestigious undergrad (IIT), and varied non-work/personal experiences that could translate to interesting essay material and interview fodder.

With your goals, I assume you're looking to the US schools? If that's the case, I would look at schools with strong social enterprise/public policy/non-profit programs and/or schools where there's more like-minded folks. Here's the list:

Stretch: HBS, Stanford (yes they are stretches for everyone but I think you have enough of a shot that they're worth applying, and where you'd be a fit given your goals)
Sweet spot: Yale, Ross, Kellogg
Safety: Georgetown (it's in DC, and the university is a hotbed for folks interested in these kinds of careers).

Another thing to look into may be a joint degree program: Harvard Kennedy School partners with various b-schools (including HBS obviously), Wharton-SAIS, and so forth.

Hi,

Good and diverse profile!!
You have good GMAT & decent GPA from one of the top UG institutes in India. Working in own business will strengthen your candidature. However, you must write about your achievements/skills, leadership style and additional aptitudes in application essays and showcase the same during final interviews. Overall, you will stand a good chance in b-school(s). You may try your chances in b-school(s) by clicking https://tinyurl.com/k6r5w6x

Let me know in case of further queries. You may PM your details for discussion in length.

Regards
Erina

Hi Alex,

Woah! Thanks for the very encouraging evaluation. . I'm thankful of having had quality work/non-work experience. Honestly I was sceptical that I could come across as someone lacking focus, whereas these moves were deliberate (circumstantial in the case of Father's illness) to understand the people and functions involved in urban development.

You're very right in pointing towards schools with programs & people having a similar core. I want to network & learn from their practical experiences in this field & share mine. I will be careful in shortlisting programs that propel me forward in this career path. Dual-degree programs would have provided an excellent impetus but I have to get back into the mainstream within twenty-odd months as I have a family to support. I'll also like to find out about scholarship chances and European programs that could help.

Hi Erina,

Thanks for the positive feedback! You're right on the need to portray strengths across all the application stages, as it's so much about leaving a good impression. I'll PM you

Thanks again, guys!

Coming from an IIT with a good GMAT score and diversified experience outside of IT you have a strong profile.

If you are looking at non-profit, I would recommend targeting schools like Northwestern Kellogg, Yale SOM, Haas, and Columbia. Both Haas and Columbia also have excellent real estate programs, your fall back plan.

Best of luck,
