D and E are wrong because of the use of are as it's not one of the potential investors

B wrong because of the use of was,we need a subjunctive mood over here as the sentence talks about a condition and also bec of the use of plural they

C wrong because of the use of with and plural them

in the original sentence "if the deal were..", isn't use of "were" wrong since "the deal" is singular?

This is correct -- "were" is subjunctive, and the subjunctive can be confusing in English.

Technically, though, the sentence should be If I were Barack Obama, I would be the president of the United States since he is still president.

Subjunctive means the things which are not of sure true I.e you just imagine things according to your thoughts but the end result can be or cannot be what you predicted.......I hope it gives you clarity now

Please note that you really do not need knowledge of Subjunctive to solve this question, as long as you know the following:

1. "Not one of the potential investors" is singular and hence, "are" is not a correct verb (D and E are out).

2. "they" and "them", as used in B and C lack a logical referent (this is a very classical Pronoun error that you should be comfortable with). Given the sentence, "they/them" can only refer to "investors", but it does not logically make sense in the context of this sentence.
