Last year, the State Assembly failed to pass a balanced budget because they could not agree on certain key provisions.

a)sentence contains a pronoun error; they needs plural antecedent & there is none in the sentence

b)The pronoun "they" is incorrect here because there is no plural antecedent + agree about is unidiomatic

c)The singular pronoun "it" correctly refers to the singular noun "the State Assembly." However, the phrase "agree about" is unidiomatic; "agree on" should be used instead.

(D) The use of "the Assemblymen" instead of "they" corrects the original pronoun problem by eliminating the pronoun "they" altogether. However, the phrase "agree about" is unidiomatic; "agree on" should be used instead.

(E) CORRECT. The use of "the Assemblymen" instead of "they" corrects the original pronoun problem by eliminating the pronoun "they" altogether.

I have a question for you thephoenix, if C had the correct idiom, would the sentence be right.

"it could not agree on."

IMO E.

E correctly uses "Assemblymen" instead of using the pronoun "they" which doesn't have a proper antecedent. Also "agreed on" is the correct idiom.

the s/c in that case wud have been correct gramatically but not logically as the state assembly is no one to agree ...it shud be the members of state assembly who decide or agrre on sme thing
and therfore E is correct in all respect
