The 'rating' of a television show is determined by taking the total number of televisions in existence and calculating what percentage of them are tuned in to the program in question. The 'share' of the same show is determined by taking the total number of televisions in operation at the time and calculating what percentage of them are tuned in to the program.

If the above information is accurate, which of the following would be statistically impossible?

1] A cooking show earns a 15 percent rating and 10 percent share while a competing documentary in the same time slot earns a 28 percent rating and an 18 percent share.
2] A comedy program earns a 60 percent share and a competing western movie in the same time slot earns a rating of 45 percent.
3] An evening news program earns a 37 percent rating and a 48 percent share on all weeknights except Friday, when the rating drops to 33 percent and the share to 39 percent.

a]2 only
b]3 only
c]1 and 2 only
d]2 and 3 only
e]1 2 and 3

The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

CR Type: Numbers and percentages: to solve such question write down the number as if it were a maths problem.

From the above Arg:
Rating = n(televisions tuned in show)/n(television)
Share = n(televisions tuned in show)/n(television operational)

Observation : n(television) > n(television operational), so in all situations share > rating as numerator is same.

1] A cooking show earns a 15 percent rating and 10 percent share while a competing documentary in the same time slot earns a 28 percent rating and an 18 percent share. --->IMPOSSIBLE as rating is greater than share.

2] A comedy program earns a 60 percent share and a competing western movie in the same time slot earns a rating of 45 percent. -->IMPOSSIBLE, 45 rating means atleast 45 Televisions are tuned in to movie, and hence in no way, share of other program can be 60% .

3] An evening news program earns a 37 percent rating and a 48 percent share on all weeknights except Friday, when the rating drops to 33 percent and the share to 29 percent. ---> IMPOSSIBLE: again as in second scenario, rating > share

IMO: E(whats the OA)

Hope that helps!!

agree with E i.e all of statement 1,2,3 incorrect .
reason is in all the scenario rating>share which is not possible.
