MGMAT: Assumption Question

by ashish2104 » Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:47 am
The media claim that the economy is entering a phase of growth and prosperity. They point to lower unemployment rates and increased productivity. This analysis is false, though. The number of people filing for bankruptcy has increased every month for the last six months, and bankruptcy lawyers report that they are busier than they have been in years.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A)Unemployment rates are not useful indicators of growth and prosperity.

B)Economic growth cannot be measured in terms of productivity.

C)Legislation has not been recently passed to make legal bankruptcy easier to obtain.

D)There has not been an increase in the number of bankruptcy lawyers.

E)The media often misrepresent the current state of economic affairs.

Is it C?

As C points out that there can be other causes for increase in bankruptcy.

If we negate C then it will weaken the argument.

C is not the best answer still but I can't see how A can be answer. If A can be answer then why not B?

1. Media claim the economy is improving due to lower unemployment and increased productivity
2. The media is wrong because more people are going bankrupt

A. Incorrect. Does the author ever say that these are not useful? No. He is just pointing out something that might have greater importance

B. Incorrect. Pretty much the same reasoning as why A is wrong,

C. Correct. In order for his argument to be valid it must be as hard as it always has been to declare bankruptcy

D. Incorrect. Whether there are more lawyers is irrelevant to how many bankruptcies there are.

E. Incorrect. He never says that or implies that. He just says in this case he believes the medias evidence is not proper.
