First time poster here. Working a daily problem from Platinum GMAT.

The ratio between x and y is 7/9; x and y are increased by 4, what is the ratio between the new values of x and y?
A) 7/9
B) 14/9
C) 7/18
D) 11/13
E) It Cannot Be Determined

I'm coming up with 67/85 but the answer is supposedly (E)

I went from 7/9 to 63/81 then added 4 to the numerator and denominator.

Answer explanation

1.Translate the given information into algebraic equations that can be easily manipulated.
Originally: (x/y) = (7/9)
Note: This DOES NOT mean x and y are 7 and 9 respectively. It only means that "the ratio between x and y is 7/9". Consequently, possible values for x and y are 7 and 9, 14 and 18, 21 and 27, etc.
2.Set up an algebraic equation for the new x and y.
((x + 4) / (y + 4)) = ?
3.In order to see if a pattern emerges, try plugging in numbers and using a chart: x y x + 4 y + 4 (x/y) = (7/9) (x + 4)/(y + 4) = ?
7 9 11 13 7/9 = .777 11/13 = .84
14 18 18 22 14/18 = .777 18/22 = .81
21 27 25 31 21/27 = .777 25/31 = .806

4.As the above chart indicates, there is no consistent ratio between x and y, and x+4 and y+4. Consequently, the answer choice E is correct.

the ratio of x:y = 7:9
lets say x = 7a and y = 9a
If we increase x and y by 4, new values for x and y becomes 7a + 4 and 9a+4
we are asked to determine what this ratio is: 7a + 4 : 9a + 4
for different values of a, the ratio would be different. If a = 1, new ratio would be 11:13 but if a=2, new ratio would in that case be 18:22 or 9:11
so we cannot determine from the given information

If x=7 and y=9, then (x+4)/(y+4) = 11/13.
If x=14 and y=18, then (x+4)/(y+4) = 18/22 = 9/11.
Since (x+y)/(y+4) can take on different values, the correct answer is E.

Here's one more approach.
The ratio between x and y is 7/9
So, we can write: x/y = 7/9
Cross multiply to get: 9x = 7y
Solve for x to get: x = 7y/9

x and y are increased by 4. What is the ratio between the new values of x and y?
In other words, what is the value of (x + 4)/(y + 4)?
To answer this, we'll replace x with 7y/9
We get: (x + 4)/(y + 4) = (7y/9 + 4)/(y + 4)
As you can see, the value of (7y/9 + 4)/(y + 4) will vary, depending on the value of y.
So, the correct answer is E

We see that x : y = 7n : 9n

So x and y can be 7 and 9, 14 and 18, 21 and 27, etc.

Increasing both x and y by 4 will create a new ratio depending on the original values of x and y. Since we don't know the actual original values of x and y, we cannot determine the new ratio.

Answer: E
