When positive integer A is divided by positive integer B, the result is 9.35. Which of the following could be the remainder when A is divided by B ?

(A) 13
(B) 14
(C) 15
(D) 16
(E) 17

The OA is B.

How can I find the remainder? It shouldn't be 0? I got confused. Experts may you help me.

Given: A/B = 9.35
So, we can write: A/B = 935/100
So, dividing A by B is the same as dividing 935 by 100
When we divide 935 by 100, we get 9 with remainder 35
Check the answer choices.....not there.

Now what?
We should recognize that we can simplify 935/100 by dividing top and bottom by 5 to get the equivalent fraction 187/20
In other words, we can say A/B = 187/20
So, dividing A by B is the same as dividing 187 by 20
When we do this, we get 9 with remainder 7
Check the answer choice.....not there.
Now what?

When I check the answer choices, I see that B (14) is a multiple of 7
That should give us a hint about another way to express our given fraction.
Take 187/20 and double the top and bottom to get the equivalent fraction 374/40
When we divide 374 by 40, we get remainder 14
DONE!

Answer: B

Hi Vincen,
Let's take a look at your question.
To find the remainder, we need to rewrite 9.35 in fraction form.
9.35 can be written as:
9.35 = 9 + 35/100 (9 represents the quotient, 35 remainder and 100 is the divisor)

Reduce the fraction 35/100,
= 9 + 7/20 (9 represents the quotient, 7 remainder and 20 is the divisor)
If we look at the answer options, we can't find 7 as a remainder, but we can see a multiple of 7 i.e. 14 in the given options.
We can rewrite the fraction by multiplying and dividing by 2, as:
= 9 + 14/40
Which shows that
remainder = 14

Therefore, Option B is correct.
