C. 2
D. 2.6

Answer: B

Solution:

The range of 8 results from either 9 - 1 or from 10 - 2. Because we are looking for the smallest average score for the class, we use 9 - 1, which indicates that the highest score was 9 and the lowest score was 1.

To determine the lowest possible average score for the class, we can assume 9 people received a score of 1 and 1 person received a score of 9. Therefore, the lowest possible average score is:

(9 x 1 + 9)/10 = 18/10 = 1.8
