in a three-event competition

by sanju09 » Fri Jul 30, 2010 4:11 am
Three teams, A, B and C each have five members. The three teams competed in a three-event competition. Five points were awarded to the winner of each event, four points to the second and three points to the third. (No points were awarded for lower positions). Which team won the competition?

1. No team scored fewer points than C, which scored 11 points.
2. Team A won two events and came second in the third event.

Team A,B,C

3 events

Total points for 3 events=36

stmt1,

Team C scored lower points.

We don't know which team scored more points.Team A or Team B?

Insuff

stmt2,

Team A points scored minimum 14 points.

From remaining 22 points Team B or Team C could have scored more points tha Team A.

Insuff

Combining 1 and 2,

Points rem=36-4-11=11

This means A scored 14 points,B and C each scored 11 points.

Pick C

I would say B

1) C came last. Either A or B could have come first - INSUFF

2) Score by A is 5+5+4. The max that either B or C could have scored is 4+4+5 which is less than what A has scored - SUFF
Thanks

From stmt2,

Team A scored minimum 14 points.

For ex consider the following scores below,

First event:
------------------

Team A=5[First place]

Team B=4[Second place]

Team A=3[Third place]

Second event:
------------------

Team A=5[First place]

Team B=4[Second place]

Team A=3[Third place]

Third event:
------------------

Team B=5[First place]

Team A=4[Second place]

Team B=3[Third place]

In this case ,Team B has 16 points.

Hence we cannot prove Team A has more points.

My bad.. 5 members in each team.. so its not necessary that every team should score in an event.
Thanks Anand
