by tito1545 » Thu Mar 03, 2011 1:27 pm
Could any one tell me why the ans is not 72% instead of 64% ??

In May Mrs Lee's earnings were 60% of the Lee family's total income. In June Mrs Lee earned 20% more than in May.If the rest of the family's income was the same both months , then in June Mrs Lee's income were approximately what percent of the Lee family's total income ?

a)64%
b)68%
c)72%
d)76%
e)80%

let's see why? In May Lee's earning is 0.6 of her family's income; In June Lee's earning is 1.2 than in May OR Lee's earning 0.6*1.2 of her family's income in May. It says all family earned the same amount except for Lee and asks about Lee's earning portion in her family's income in June (be careful, we need only June and not May and June) --> basically it's again 0.6*1.2 BUT Lee's family income also raised from May to June by 0.2 portion of Lee's earning (0.6*0.2), so 0.6*1.2/(1+0.6*0.2) = 72/100 : 112/100 = 72/112 = .64 :)

Thanks a ton ,
Could you please elaborate on :

"BUT Lee's family income also raised from May to June by 0.2 portion of Lee's earning (0.6*0.2), so 0.6*1.2/(1+0.6*0.2) = 72/100 : 112/100 = 72/112 = .64 "
