by mundasingh123 » Thu Aug 26, 2010 2:47 am
26.A recording system was so secretly installed and operated in the Kennedy Oval Office that even Theodore C. Sorensen, the White House counsel, did not know it existed.
(A) A recording system was so secretly installed and operated in the Kennedy Oval Office that
(B) So secret was a recording system installation and operation in the Kennedy Oval Office
(C) It was so secret that a recording system was installed and operated in the Kennedy Oval Office
(D) A recording system that was so secretly installed and operated in the Kennedy Oval Office
(E) Installed and operated so secretly in the Kennedy Oval Office was a recording system that

OA A
Hi i am confused between A and E which is an inverted sentence.
Now,We know that the subject in a clause can be refrred to by It in the parallel clause. So A recording system is the subject in both A and E and can act as an antecedent in both A and E

Look for common errors before you look for exotic ones. In E, the reordering of the sentence renders the pronoun it unnecessary. The sentence should read:

....a recording system that even Theodore C. Sorensen...did not know existed.

Also, if you're left with A and another answer choice, and you can't spot a clear error in A, eliminate the other answer choice and choose A. It's safer to stick with the original sentence.

But Mitch,in the sentence that you have given the that clause modifies the noun recording system and in the SC question option E,the that clause signifies the consequence of the way the recording system was installed and operated.
Cannot there be such a clause after the noun recording system.

The clause that even Thomas C. Sorensen did not know seems to be functioning differently in A and E.

In A, the that clause is part of the idiom so X that Y:

A recording system was so secretly installed...that even Thomas C. Sorensen did not know...

In E, placing the that clause next to recording system implies that the that clause is an adjective modifying the recording system:

Installed so secretly was a recording system that even Thomas C Sorensen did not know.....

This is another reason that E is incorrect: it changes the intended meaning, which is that the system was installed and operated so secretly that even Thomas C Sorensen did not know it existed.

Hi Mitch,
I did not know it was manadatory for the "that clause " after the noun recording system to modify the noun recording system.
Thanks Mitch for this tip.We always get to learn something new from your explanations and the depth in your concepts.
