As written (choice A), the participial phrase defying .... inside prison walls must modify the subject of the sentence, inmates. However, the inmates are not acting in defiance of anything; it's the situation described -- eat[ing] in the same cafeterias, sleep[ing] in the same campsites, and wear[ing] the same uniforms as paid firefighters -- that defies social expectations. For this reason, choices A through C are contrary to the logical sense of the sentence. Choice D and E replace the participial phrase with an appositive noun phrase. This phrase is set in juxtaposition to everything that came before and further defines it. Choice D, an arrangement to defy..., is unidiomatic and at best implies a purpose or intent of the arrangement that is not necessary. Choice E does not have these problems.

Let's have a critical look at all the question.
Option A: every activities the inmates were made to go through in the wilderness is to defy the rigid relationship barriers enforced. It is important to know that it has been done and this is a typical setting or better call an arrangement it puts the inmates in that place of getting closer and to know one another. Defying is a present continuous tense, and it does not follow suit and parallelism of the previous sentence. Thus, the option is not correct.

Option B: The sentence construction is poor and needs a proper alignment. There was a process enacted or say an 'arrangement' put in place. The use of they is not necessary and makes this option buggy, thereby giving it different meaning in the end. Hence, option B is wrong

Option c: since the first part of this entire sentence clearly states an activity that was carried out, the latter part should be in past tense to buttress the fact that it actions before. So, it is better to say an arrangement that defies and an arrangement that defy. The past tense of defy is defied. This is a sheer error to use defy instead of DEFIED

Option D: AN ARRANGEMENT TO DEFY to is an infinitive market that is use to indicate a purpose to come (as being used in the sentence). Meanwhile, all actions have executed the succeeding clause to point explain a 'complete act' and not 'about to be complete act'. This option is therefore wrong/

Option E: This must definitely be the correct answer . First of all, it gives the proper knowledge about the whole ARIZONA INMATE story and makes it understandable that all actions were a sort of arrangement put in place and the later finite verbs were in present continuous. Therefore, the option is the correct answer to this question <i class="em em-blush"></i>

look at choice d,. yes. I thing in the pattern " noun to do" , to do is used to show a future action not happening. the meaning in choice E is more logic. the defying is already happening and is not a future action.

we need to know this pattern noun+ to do to realize the meaning/logic error gmat want us to know.
