The sentence is comparing the Hopi native Americans who placed high value in order to retain their ancestral lands to the Nez Perce native Americans who left their lands and fled.

Option A - Incorrect
The preposition that begins the clause changes the meaning of the sentence. It makes the sentence absurd and incorrect.

Option B - Incorrect
This comma used in-between these phrases makes the sentence seem illogical.

Option C - Incorrect
''The retention of which held high value for them'' changes the intended meaning of the sentence. It doesn't show the comparison at all.

Option D - Incorrect
It is wrong because there's no subject-verb agreement. Using the present continuous verb ''placing'' to explain an event that has happened in the past.

Option E - Correct
Option E uses the correct idiom to compare both sentences structurally and correctly
